“Without your health you have nothing” is a quote I’ve learned to appreciate in the past five years. Being in my early thirties I am starting to see and feel the effects of the wear and tear our bodies take. This is one reason why I’ve dedicated more time to working out and making better food decisions. One thing that always peaks my interest when talking with people is how much everybody knows about health and fitness but how little they take action on those things especially when it involves money. Why is it we are ok with spending $100 to go out to dinner, $500 on the third flat screen HDTV for the house, and iPhones for everybody but we’re not willing to make a small investment into our health?
Case in point is an uncle of mine. He’s in his 50s, is nearing retirement at GM, and loves to golf and bowl. Last Christmas I gave away an entire box of Shakeology samples to my family. I’ve been using Shakeology almost daily for the past 2 years and know what the nutrition alone has done for me. After telling my family members what it can do I spent a couple extra minutes talking to my uncle about it. I informed him how to prepare it and what to expect especially around day 3 (i.e, feeling better and pooping). Christmas ended and everybody took a couple of samples home. Three days go by and my uncle calls to tell me he went to the Dr.’s to make sure everything was alright because he had a bowel movement that was larger than anything he took in 20+ years. The Dr. said he was fine. My uncle went on to tell me he had lost 7 pounds in those 3 days and all he was doing differently was having Shakeology in the morning. He was very excited to see these results in only a short couple of days and he asked me where he could buy it. My uncle buys 3 bags of Shakeology over the next couple months and drops 20+ pounds from only drinking Shakeology in the morning. No working out, eats the same food, and still drinks beer. Shakeology was cleaning his system out and getting him healthier.
While I’ve seen my uncle at family events over the past year I thought he was still buying Shakeology through my brother who is a Beachbody Coach also. But something didn’t look right. It looked like he was putting the weight back on. I saw my uncle yesterday and he said he was taking some new pill that all it does is make you poop. He was happy to tell me that he gets 60 pills for $5 which is far cheaper than the $120 he was spending on a bag of Shakeology. “Are you losing weight or just pooping” I asked him. “Just pooping” he said. I went into a little economics on him saying if you only bought the ingredients in Shakeology that made you poop then you’d probably be spending about the same. However, Shakeology is more than something that makes you poop. Its a 70+ ingredient meal replacement shake that takes care of your daily nutrition all in one scoop. My uncle was so fixated on the price of Shakeology instead of what he was getting in return. By going the cheap route he was missing out on what’s most important. His overall health.
Good Ain’t Cheap And Cheap Ain’t Good
I occasional get into discussions with people about the price of P90X, Insanity, and Shakeology. Most of the time it’s geared towards them being able to buy something else for half the price and overlooking the plethora of results these products have produced. There is a reason why P90X, Insanity, and Shakeology cost as much as they do. It’s because THEY ARE WORTH IT. I see too many people try to compare Shakeology against some protein shake and say its just as good and a better deal. A quick look at the ingredients shows that it only has 10 of the same ingredients Shakeology has. I’m sorry. It’s not as good and its not a better deal. You’re trying to compare a Ford Focus to a Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500. Two totally different cars.
My Uncle Isn’t The Only One
Without going into a discussion about why you should do P90X or Insanity over another workout (doing something is better than nothing) I’ll just focus on Shakeology. I get a lot of people who are excited to get started with one of the workouts and when I tell them they need to buy Shakeology as it simplifies the meal plans and achieves your daily dose of nutrition in one shake they balk when I tell them the price. I understand why they do it as they were not expecting another $120 to the tab especially for a food related product. What’s funny is I was reading a book not to long ago that brought up the point that since the internet evolved starting in 1999 til the present day we have been conditioned to find the cheapest price on everything we buy. The manufacturers know this and spend more time pumping out cheap products because we are so focused on the lowest price. Where as in the 1980s and 1990s you never thought of buying cheap because everybody knew it was well…cheap. Sorry to go off on a tangent but these are the scenarios I get next:
- They buy it and use it everyday. Shakeology does everything it says its going to do and more. They love it and continue to buy it monthly.
- They buy it and use it til the first bag is empty. Shakeology does everything it says its going to do and more. They go onto buying a new bag every couple of months and send me emails saying they’ve put the weight back on, not getting results with the workouts, lack of energy, etc.
- They buy it and use it til the first bag is empty. Shakeology does everything it says its going to do and more. They don’t buy another bag and send me an email saying they bought some protein shake for half the price. A month later I get an email saying they’ve put the weight back on, not getting results with the workouts, lack of energy, etc.
- They don’t buy Shakeology. I get an email a month later saying they’re not seeing results with the workout. They can’t lose weight as they are not following the meal plan. I recommend Shakeology and they buy it. I get an email the month later saying they are seeing results now, losing weight, feeling better, etc.
- They don’t buy Shakeology. I get an email a month later saying they’re not seeing results with the workout. I recommend Shakeology again and they don’t buy it. I never hear from them again.
- They don’t buy Shakeology. I never hear from them again.
I am by no means an expert on health and fitness but I have picked up a couple of things over the past couple years of doing the Beachbody workouts and using their nutritional products. I’ve heard that over 70% of your health is determined by what you eat and only 30% of it is what you do. I would agree with that. It’s amazing how simple changes in what you eat can deliver such dramatic changes in your workout and health results.
To wrap this up I would just like to say that if you are using something that is helping you from head to toe and not here and there then keep buying and using it everyday. Going cheap on your body now is going to cost you later.
