P90X Kenpo X is one of my favorite P90X workouts. I remember when I first started doing P90X and when it was time for the Kenpo X workout. It ranks up there with workouts that I never would of ever thought of doing. Kind of like the P90X yoga x workout. I was always a go to the gym do some curls and bench presses kind of guy with some occasional running in between.
What Is P90X Kenpo X All About?
The P90X Kenpo X workout is more of a high intensity workout focusing on a lot of balancing. It is a complete body workout. For the better part of an hour you are throwing punches and doing kicks. It really is a fun workout because Tony Horton gets you throwing “Upper Cuts,” “Jabs”, and “Hooks” as if you were fighting somebody. My favorite moves are where you are doing punches and throwing an occasional kick in there. Speed is one thing that you will gain from doing P90X Kenpo X.
I have noticed better balance and an overall awareness of what my body can and cannot do. What I mean by this is by doing a martial art type of workout I have started testing out my reflexes, speed, and strength all at the same time. This is not some normal workout where you are working the same muscle. Here you are using all of them and working on getting faster with your kicks and punches. The P90X Kenpo X workout always seems to fly by so fast.
You will enjoy the P90X results you get when doing Kenpo X. I highly suggest doing P90X Kenpo X with a friend if you can. Its kind of a funny workout with Tony Horton running the show. This way you can have a few laughs with a workout partner while kicking some butt.
How Can You Make P90X Kenpo X More Intense?
After you have done P90X Kenpo X a couple times you might not feel like you are getting that much out of it. While it is a great workout, P90X Kenpo X is designed to be a cardio / recovery workout. More or less something to keep the body moving and having fun but it comes at the end of the week after doing lots of hard resistance workouts. To make it more intense try doing it with weighted gloves, a weighted vest, or both. I have done it using just gloves, the vest, and both. My back is always sore from throwing punches with the gloves on. Add the vest into it and the legs get worked out a little more.
All in all, P90X Kenpo X is a fun workout. You will work on your balance, cardio strength, and even a couple karate moves. This does not mean you’ll be able to defend yourself in a fight so don’t go trying it. Have fun burning calories with P90X Kenpo X.
I just started p90x and tonight was my kenpo night. I am the most uncoordinated person ever. Sooo doing the jabs, upper cuts and hooks is difficult. I’m not doing them the right way. I still want to get a good workout on my 6th day, but doing this video is a little hard for me. Am I able to replace it with the Cardio X for the 1st few weeks? What do you suggest?
@ Molly – This is why you need to do Kenpo. Your balance and coordination will improve the more that you do it.
Hey…I just started P90x a few days ago and now I’m on the Kenpo X portion of it. I used to be in Taekwondo, so I have done alot of counltess kicks and punches and other various types of body strikes.
I’m just wondering if I should do this workout, or If I should replace it with another?
Also wondering about the diet plan..I dont know if there is another section on this website for the diet plan…But from the way I figured it out to be is, I am on Phase 1, type II….When does this change? Do I change the phase I am on, or do I change from Phase 1, 2 and 3 with the 3 phases of P90x? (Meaning the first 4 weeks, I am Phase 1 Diet….weeks 4-8 I am Phase II Diet…and phaste 8-12, I am Phase III Diet.) – Is that how it works?
Thanks
@ Nate
Give Kenpo a try and see how you like it. It might be not as advanced as you are use too and if its not then substitute Cardio X or Core Synergistics instead. If you are already in the Phase 3 plan of the meal plan then thats where you want to stay. You need the extra carbs for the energy.
HELP!!!
I started the beachbody work out by Shaun T…My problem is I have had some physical problems in the past.. I suffered a broken neck and a collapsed lung, alot of workouts are hard for me to do…what can you suggest for me???>
@ JO
Insanity is a tough workout and it might not be the best thing to get started with. I would recommend you do Power 90. It is still challenging but does not go at the fast pace of Insanity. You can check it out in the Beachbody Store.
hi im doing p90x and am now on my 13th day. i do not like doing yoga simply because I cant sit still for a very long time but I am doing the x stretch. What should i do in place of yoga ? Also I am a college baseball player advice would be great
@ Brian
Don’t skip Yoga X. It works on all of the small muscles that the other P90X workouts do not. I add 5 push ups to each vinyasa when doing Yoga X. That’s over 100 push ups during the routine. Do sprints after Plyometrics or P90X Legs and Back.
I borrowed P90X from a friend and do not know which order to do the exircises in. I just finished kenpo x and I have to admit, although it was difficult at times, I feel so much better and refreshed even though I’m covered in sweat. Can you tell me which ones I’m supposed to do and on what days?

Just started P90X this week. I’m 48 years old. I need to lose some weight and gain endurance. I’m pretty strong – been lifting and doing cardio (Mostly eliptical) for a good while. This is kicking my butt! I struggle to complet the workouts. I’m hoping it gets better. Wasn’t a big fan of the yoga and am wondering about Kenpo. Plus – the Ab Ripper X – I swear, I can’t do a tenth of what they do on the DVD. Am I different than most folks, that I can’t keep up?
P90X is a lot different than just lifting normal weights and the cardio huh? I was also surprised in the beginning. You’ll find out how much Yoga makes you better at the rest of the moves the more you do it. Its normal to not be able to do as much as the people on the dvd. They did an entire round of P90X before starting. Focus on your form and stick with it. The meal plans make a difference so stick with it. Add Shakeology from the Beachbody Store to simplify things.
I want to put my two cents in about the yoga. When my husband and I started P90X 9 weeks ago we HATED the yoga. We didn’t touch it for three weeks. Then after the recovery week for phase 1 I said we have to suck it up and try it again. Now we just love it. It took awhile but now my husband is flexible again and he can do the crane (I still struggle with that). But it’s so fun to see how you can push your body further each week. My advice is to keep at it, do what you can and you will eventually love that workout. Maybe instead of doing it on thursdays you can switch it with kenpo x and do it on saturdays, if time is a big factor?
Oh I forgot to add what I think of ab ripper x. Do it before the workouts. We were also skipping it a lot and now we do it before every work out and we are MUCH better at it. I can now keep up with Tony and my form is much better, I can straighten my legs etc. It just takes time. It took time for your body to not be in great shape and now it takes time to get it in shape.
Live P90x I am a gym rat in great shape and use it during the week at home since its hard to get to the gym all the time. I do hit the gym hard Friday, Sat and Sun.
Thing is I have done the Yoga many times but I hate it, I have begun doing other YoganTapesmfrom other instructors on Yoga day since they are at leastm30-40 mins shorter.
It is terrible but I wake up on yoga and kenpo day going…why oh why must I do these I HATE THEM!
GO AT YOUR OWN PACE… DOING HALF OF THE DVD IS BETTER THAN NOT DOING IT AT ALL
